All residential, commercial and industrial rate payers in the Omaha metro and suburban communities who use the regional sewer system will also help pay the estimated $1.6 billion for the required improvements. Residential sewer rates will see the average residential rate increase from $15/month to around $50/month by the year 2017.
It was recognized early in the Program study that these new rates would be a hardship for some residents. The City took a pro-active role and along with the Community Basin Panel formed a sub-committee to determine assistance options for fixed and low income residents when rates begin to rise.
Phase one of the assistance program will be available in 2012 and will be provided through the existing energy assistance program managed by M.U.D. who bills the sewer fees on behalf of the City.
